24 HOURS IN ATHENS – PART ONE

Square

WHERE WE STAYED

I guess the trip didn’t start off as expected with a 4 hour delay (thank you easyjet!)I was more concerned about our transfers and the airbnb host however both were perfect and apparently it is a regular occurance. Our pad was located in Metaxourgeio and it was perfect, we couldn’t have asked for more, if you are staying in Athens you HAVE to stay here.

AN EARLY START

We started our day off early wandering the streets at 8:30am and it seemed like the city was still asleep! I purposefully chose a cafe on the other side of town (Kimolia Art Cafe) however when we arrived the menu wasn’t to our tastes (it was more of lunch place) so we headed down into the Place area and strolled around the streets and came across a cute little bakery where we stopped off for a takeout pastry at Lulus and continued up toward the Acropolis with it in hand.

THE ACROPOLIS

Just to forewarn anyone who goes to Athens that the Acropolis on phone maps is 100% not where you can get in! We spent a good 15 minutes along with a couple of American girls trying to find an entrance before stumbling on the south side entry point. I will admit it is expensive (€20 each) to get in but when in Athens how could you not go to one of the most famous sites in the world! It was incredibly busy but so worth it for the panoramic views of the city, it was just a shame about the scaffolding but from what I had read that is there constantly anyway and some jazzy camera angles meant you could hide it anyway.

PITTA STOP

For lunch I had come across a place called Okostas which apparently had the best souvlaki so of course I had to try them for myself! At just €1.80 each it was probably the cheapest food we bought for our entire trip and I have to admit was probably the tastiest too! If you are heading to Athens then that is somewhere I would highly recommend.

ANCIENT AGORA

To walk off those carbs and find some shade we headed over to the ancient agora ruins as the temperatures soared we explored the museum and relaxed on the benches in the quiet haven in the bustling city.

If you want to know what we did in the evening then keep those eyes peeled as I’ll be popping the post up soon! Didn’t want an overload of info in one post!
