for the love of lemons

The La Masseria Farm was a personal highlight of this trip. Being under canopies of lemon trees is one of the goals I told my grandad I wanted to achieve the day before he passed. We found this gem online and emailed to book on. We arrived in the afternoon and pulled up onsite, greeted warmly by our host Eugenio. After short introductions with our fellow holiday makers we began our tour, walking around the small farm being taught how the family supported themselves, their way of life and their pride on being self sufficient. We loved Hedi the goat and seeing all the beautiful produce fresh on the vines and trees. We walked under rows and rows of the fully functioning lemon farm soaking in the stunning scent and learning how they cultivate trees and harvest the crops. There are so many things I didn’t know before we took this adventure. Before I knew it our tour had come to an end. Papa greeted us under the terrace with plates of freshly sliced lemons coated in sugar. Not good for the waistband but the most stunning thing I have ever eaten and we sipped down glasses of super chilled lemonade, perfect after our walk. We sampled different flavoured olive oils too and enjoyed all the local produce thoroughly. We knocked back a homemade limoncello before waving goodbye to a few of our fellow travellers. We stayed back with another family where we were invited into the home and Mama cooked us a beautiful three course dinner. It was true hearty Italian fare. Fresh pasta and sauces filled us to bursting whilst we chatted and laughed with the other guests. To this day we still stay in touch! When travelling you think you ave the real experience but this really was the real Italian way of life!
